Greg Raymer was born on June 25, 1964 and has become one of the most recognizable poker figures in the world following his spectacular 2004 World Series of Poker main event win. Known for wearing opaque holographic sunglasses that he sometimes wears during hands, Greg 'Fossilman' Raymer became a poker icon after he parlayed a $160 online poker satellite tournament into a $10,000 seat in the WSOP main event and won $5 million dollars. After the win, he quit his day job as a long time patent attorney to play poker professionally and to promote the sport through his endorsement deal with Pokerstars online poker room. Raymer's nickname "Fossilman" come from his passion of collecting fossils and his use of a small fossil as a card protector while he plays poker.

In the No Limit Texas Hold'em main event Fossilman defeated up and coming superstar David Williams when his 8 of spades and 8 of diamonds defeated Williams' Ace of hearts and 4 of spades. The win, which duplicated Chris Moneymaker's similar online satellite to World Series of Poker main event championship in 2003 generated huge media attention and was a major force in helping the poker boom continue to grow.
Amazingly, Greg Raymer nearly replicated the feat the next year when he finished in 25th place out of 5,619 entrants in the 2005 WSOP Main Event for an additional $304,680. Playing against so many opponents in the tournament and finishing so strong gave a considerable amount of creditability to Greg Raymer's tournament poker skil and was described as one of the most incredible achievements in poker. The Fossilman suffered a bad beat with three tables remaining in the event when his pocket Kings lost to Aaron Kanter's Queen of hearts and Jack of hearts after Raymer trapped Kanter by getting him to call his all in bed as a huge 4 to 1 favorite. Kanter luckily made a flush on the river which crippled Raymer's stack and led to him being knocked out moments later.
Greg Raymer, using the Pokerstars name Fossilman, has also had recent online poker success with a 2nd place finish in a $1,000,000 guaranteed tournament on PokerStars for over $180,000 out of more then 1,500 tournament players. On September 17, 2007 Raymer won the $320 buy-in World Championship of Online Poker Pot Limit Omaha with Rebuys Event on PokerStars winning $168,362.
