Thuan "Scotty" Nguyen was born October 28, 1962 in Nha Trang, Vietnam. One of the most recognizable professional poker players, Scotty Nguyen can be seen playing in nearly every tournament year round. Scotty Nguyen is famous for saying "baby" and "yeah baby" frequently during poker tournaments. Playing with a lot of emotion, he is also well known for describing a bat beat somebody takes as "That's poker baby".
From 2000 to 2004 he cashed in more than hundred different tournaments. His fame started during the 1998 World Series of Poker when he won the main event, and has a total of four World Series of Poker bracelets. The final hand of the World Series of Poker 1998 Main Event the community cards contained a full house, 9-9-8-8-8. As one of the most famous WSOP lines in history, Scotty said to his opponent Kevin McBride: "You call, gonna be all over baby!". McBride made the call, and Scotty Nguyen had a 9 in his hand to give him a better full house, 9-9-9-8-8 and win the championship.Unfortunately, the greatest moment in Scotty's life was overshadowed by a tragic death to his brother the very next day when a car hit his brother in Vietnam. Scotty honors his brother by not wearing his 1998 World Series of Poker Championship bracelet.
A regular fixture at World Poker Tour final tables, Nguyen won the WPT World Poker Open event in Tunica Mississippi in 2006. With four players remaining including the breakout performance of Gavin Smith who took fourth, Scotty Nguyen beat Michael "The Grinder" Mizrachi heads-up in when his Ace of clubs and Queen of clubs made the nut flush against Mizrachi's Ace of spades and Jack of diamonds on the first hand heads-up. Scotty joins an elite group of 5 players to win both the main event of the World Series of Poker and a World Poker Tour title.
Recently Scotty Nguyen bubbled the final table of the 2007 World Series of Poker Main Event, finishing in 11th place out of 6,358 entrants and won $476,926. At the end, he played a hand very badly when he check raised with a pair of queens on a king high board into a player who flopped a set.
His total live tournament winnings are about $8,000,000.
Scotty Nguyen has also made appearances on the Ultimate Blackjack Tour playing Elimination Blackjack.
Scotty Nguyen's World Series of Poker Bracelets include 2 Omaha 8 or Better (1997, 2001) for $156,950 and $287,580, the 1998 $10,000 No Limit Hold'em World Championship for $1,000,000 and the $2,500 Pot Limit Omaha event in 2001 for $178,480 2001.
Scotty Nguyen is one of the most entertaining poker celebrities and often entertains the crowd around him as well as the players at his table. Often drinking beer while playing, Scotty's card sense and style allow him to amass large chip leads in many tournaments he enters. His friendly and fun loving personality especially in front of the cameras coupled with the sheer number of tournaments he enters makes him a regular fixture in televised poker tournaments.
